Elizabeth A. McMillan was also known as Lizzie. She was born in 1850 at Ontario, Canada. She appeared on the census of 1861 in the household of James Eliphalet McMillan at Bowmanville, Durham Co., Ontario, Canada. She is listed as: Elisebeth McMillan, born Canada West, Methodist, age 11, female, single, attended school. She and Samuel Moote were married by Reverend Mr. Dennett on Tuesday, 31 December 1872 at San Francisco, San Francisco Co., California, USA. Elizabeth died on Thursday, 4 November 1875 on board the Steamship Pacific, somewhere off Cape Flattery, Washington, USA, at age 25 years. She had been in Victoria to attend the christening of her nephew Charles E. Watkins and to visit her parents. The Pacific collided with the ship Orpheus and all but two people perished. Her husband ran a series of rewards for the return of her body, which seems to have never been found. The Reward Notices and other articles can be found here.
