John Hale was born on Saturday, 3 March 1804 at Ontario, Canada. He and Mary Arnold, daughter of Henry Arnold and Sarah Maybee, were married by Presbyterian Reverend James Harris on Wednesday, 24 February 1830 at Etobicoke Twp., York Co., Ontario, Canada. On July 11 1840, he applied to the Second Heir and Devisee Commission to claim Lot 12, concession 8, Charlotteville Township, Talbot District, as the heir-at-law of the original nominee Eliphalet Hale. John was the oldest son of Henry Hale who was the oldest son of Eliphalet Hale. He witnessed the marriage of Mary Cairns and William Fulton Arnold, Tuesday, 11 January 1848 Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.
