Jonathan B. Townsend was born at England. He and Louisa McMillan, daughter of James McMillan and Millennium Hale, were married by Reverend Henry James Grasett on Friday, 4 November 1842 at St. James' Church, Toronto, York Co., Ontario, Canada.
In 1856/1857 he built and ran the first hotel in Bement called the Sherman House.
